Aurora hugged him. Hard.
“How have you been?”
Francis studied her closely.
She seemed uninjured, nor did she appear to be hiding any bruises.
And she wore her usually sunny smile.
But his time in counterintelligence warned all of it could be a lie.
His sister raced down the steps of Riverwood to meet his carriage.
Francis balled his fists at his sides.
He didn’t care if Duke Erembour was the most feared counterespionage agent in all England.
He would end him if he’d hurt Aurora.
Francis received a letter from his sister.
She desperately needed to see him.
If Duke Erembour had hurt her…
Francis packed his bags.
He should have listened to his father.
The previous Duke of Aegir had warned Francis not to enlist.
Not to fight for king and country.
After all he had seen, all he had done, he was surprised his hands weren’t stained red.
Yet he had come home when so many others hadn’t.
The Earl of Warrington had invited Francis to play billiards and discuss some of the new happenings with the railroads.
The earl was a friend, but Francis wasn’t certain he should attend.
He hadn’t been good company in a long time.
Not since he’d come home from the war.
Another sleepless night.
Too many nightmares and not enough dreams.
Francis sat on the end of his bed and ran a hand through his hair.
And wondered how long before the nightmares would end.
If they ever would.
